About Cline
Cline is an open-source autonomous coding agent that runs as a VS Code extension. Unlike autocomplete tools, Cline operates as an agent that can plan, execute and iterate on multi-step coding tasks — creating files, writing code, running terminal commands, reading output and fixing errors.
The agent works with any LLM API: Claude, GPT-4, Gemini, open-source models or local LLMs. Every action requires your explicit approval before execution, maintaining human oversight while enabling autonomous workflows.
Cline can scaffold projects, implement features across multiple files, debug by reading error output and iterating, run tests and fix failures, install dependencies and configure environments. The human-in-the-loop design means it asks for approval before file changes and terminal commands.
Cline is completely free and open-source. You provide your own API keys for the LLM of your choice.
