ATD Verdict
The Most Integrated AI Coding Tool — Backed by GitHub's Ecosystem
GitHub Copilot remains one of the most polished AI coding assistants available. Its deep integration with GitHub — pull requests, issues, Actions, code review — gives it a unique advantage over standalone tools like Cursor. The code suggestions are fast and context-aware, and Copilot Workspace is a compelling vision for AI-assisted development. However, Cursor offers more advanced multi-file editing and model flexibility. Copilot is the safe, enterprise-ready choice; Cursor is the power-user pick.
Best for: Professional developers who use GitHub daily, enterprise teams needing IP indemnity, and developers who prefer JetBrains IDEs over VS Code
Not ideal for: Developers who want the most advanced multi-file AI editing (Cursor is stronger here), or teams not using GitHub

What is GitHub Copilot?
GitHub Copilot is the AI coding assistant that started the revolution. Launched in 2021 as a collaboration between GitHub and OpenAI, it was the first AI tool to bring real-time code suggestions directly into the editor. Since then, it has grown into a comprehensive AI development platform.
The core experience is inline code suggestions: as you type, Copilot predicts what you are trying to write and suggests completions ranging from a single line to entire functions. The suggestions are informed by your current file, open tabs, and project context.
Copilot Chat adds a conversational interface for asking questions about your code, explaining functions, debugging errors, generating tests, and writing documentation. It understands your workspace and can reference specific files and symbols.
Copilot Workspace is the newest addition: describe a task in natural language — a feature request, bug fix, or refactoring — and Copilot creates an implementation plan, generates the code changes across multiple files, and lets you review and iterate before committing.
